How to Be a Good Ally

Cultural Competency/Humility & Ally-Building

  • Educate yourself and your children about Native American people in your area and learn about the tribe that originally occupied the land

  • Celebrate Indigenous peoples culture, but not appropriating it by dressing in costume, e.g., Native American costumes and dressing as Native Americans for Halloween or in school settings

  • Identify Native Americans in your statistical data and refrain from making assumptions about an individual's race. This is particularly important for MMIW, but also important in all data collection (including school records, police records, and medical records)

  • Support Native American Tribal initiatives, businesses, artists, community leaders, and more

  • Diversify your workforce to be inclusive of Native Americans

  • Help share and locate missing indigenous women and girls

  • Speak up when Native Americans are not being represented

The National Indigenous Women's Resource Center provides a special collection for ally-building and cultural competency/humility. View their collection below.
